All during December we were busy incorporating Chanukah songs into our music program. This involved not just learning lots of words and music, but finding ways to creatively use the melodies to teach rhythm, instrument skills, and creative movement. I am proud to present a video compilation of some favorite activities this year. Here is our youngest group, KA and KB, singing Sivivon Sov Sov Sov and another favorite, known as the "Candle Song." Another popular tune meant for our younger students is "Sivivon Round," sung first by 1A, then 1B.: The traditional favorite, "Chanukah Chag Yafeh," was used for a couple of classroom activities. In second grade, we practiced two different rhythms which we then performed on percussion instruments. Watch as 2A and then 2B add some great beats to the song. In third grade, we learned how to accompany the song on our tone bars. The fact that the melody only has three chords made it easy for all three classes to master: We not only learned Chanukah songs in Hebrew and English, but Yiddish and Ladino as well. Fourth grade really enjoyed learning to sing "Chanukah Oh Chanukah" three different ways. Here, 4A sings the first half of the song, while 4B tackles the last half. Our school celebrations wouldn't be complete without the participation of our lower school choir. They worked quite hard on their Chanukah repertoire, and we are proud of them. Here is an excerpt from their performance at Wegmans Owings Mills, and a few days later in the school lobby.

Sara R. FuldI have been teaching lower school music at KSDS since the fall of 2004. I received a BA and MAT from Goucher College and have been certified by the State of Maryland to teach both Elementary Education and Music K-12. When I'm not teaching, you might see me running up Greenetree Road, biking through Stevenson, and sitting in the stands at Ravens and O's games. Archives
