Every fall since I have been teaching at KSDS, kindergarten students have made friends with Bernie Bee, the friendly apian puppet who only comes out just before Rosh Hashana. We sing "Bernie Bee, Bernie Bee, Rosh Hashana Honey Bee" and pass little Bernie around the circle. We learn that he's just so proud to "bee" here because he helps make the honey that we enjoy during the holiday. Bernie then lands in a place of honor and listens while we sing some other holiday songs, such as "Tapuchim Ud'vash" and "Tu Tu Tu."

Oh, how pleasant it is for brothers and sisters to gather together...what better way to celebrate our renewed community after a summer apart than to sing, in Hebrew, Hinei Ma Tov U Ma Na'im (sorry, folks, no Hebrew font here.) Our students learned a brand new version of this traditional favorite which features a catchy tune and beat. Once we learned the song, we played along to the recording with these pitched percussion tubes known as Boomwhackers.
Curious about what the song sounds like? Hear the composer, Mikey Pauker, perform this in a youtube video:

Sara R. FuldI have been teaching lower school music at KSDS since the fall of 2004. I received a BA and MAT from Goucher College and have been certified by the State of Maryland to teach both Elementary Education and Music K-12. When I'm not teaching, you might see me running up Greenetree Road, biking through Stevenson, and sitting in the stands at Ravens and O's games. Archives
