Every year, we celebrate Thanksgiving with a wide-ranging repertoire that incorporates instruments, movement, singing, and some creative props. Songs include the usual food-related silliness, but we also make time for more serious tunes that highlight the true sentiment behind the holiday--thankfulness. Below, each of our kindergarten and first grade classes show how much fun Thanksgiving at KSDS can be.

In this fun lesson that we did last week, second graders were given sets of popsicle sticks to arrange in four-beat rhythm patterns. A stick by itself was a "tah," or quarter note, and two sticks paired together were read at "tati," or two eighth notes. After chanting their own rhythm pattern to the class, everyone read each other's rhythms by moving in a circular fashion. In subsequent lessons, the sticks are replaced by actual quarter and eighth notes, a concept easily absorbed because of the preparation that working with the sticks provided. In the video below, 2A demonstrates the popsicle stick activity.
Today our Lower School Choir sang this lovely tribute at our flag ceremony in the lobby. Enjoy!

Sara R. FuldI have been teaching lower school music at KSDS since the fall of 2004. I received a BA and MAT from Goucher College and have been certified by the State of Maryland to teach both Elementary Education and Music K-12. When I'm not teaching, you might see me running up Greenetree Road, biking through Stevenson, and sitting in the stands at Ravens and O's games. Archives
