This week our fourth graders created a vocal composition using an ipad app called "Loopy." Using this app, you can record short, repeating tracks and then layer them on top of each other to create harmonies or interesting rhythms. Our inspiration was a viral video from Youtube called "Harry Potter Puppet Pals," a rhythmic speech piece that uses the names of the famous story's characters. The activity was part of a multi-lesson unit on ostinatos, the musical term for those endlessly repeating rhythms or melodic phrases. Listen below to our "Amazing Fourth Grade Harmonic Choir," created entirely through the magic of technology. Note: this "video" only contains an audio track; there are no visuals. If your child is interested in experimenting with Loopy at home, it is available for both tablets and phones for a nominal charge in many app stores.

Sara R. FuldI have been teaching lower school music at KSDS since the fall of 2004. I received a BA and MAT from Goucher College and have been certified by the State of Maryland to teach both Elementary Education and Music K-12. When I'm not teaching, you might see me running up Greenetree Road, biking through Stevenson, and sitting in the stands at Ravens and O's games. Archives
