Video games can be amusing, but don't really have a place in the music classroom, right? Wrong, as you shall soon see. In many places across the country and around the world, music teachers are producing videos for YouTube that allow children to interact with music in engaging and creative ways. Watch as our first grade plays along to Delibes' Sylvia Pizzicato:
Here is the video they were watching as they played:
Below, our fourth graders accompany Rossini's famous William Tell Overture. This play-along video is more complex, using symbols representing five different percussion instruments that play at different times.
And here is the video that showed them what to do. During the lesson, they also learned what the apple signifies in this piece of music. If you have a fourth grader, ask them to tell you the story.

The months of February and March are busy ones for the music department, as the general studies plays for second, third, and fourth grade are all in rehearsal. Third grade's America-themed play, fourth grade's Maryland History Play, and second grade's Fairy Tale program are all traditions that originated in the early years of our school. Preparing all these programs meant some crazy, but rewarding, weeks of preparation in the Krieger. Below are musical highlights from each performance.

Sara R. FuldI have been teaching lower school music at KSDS since the fall of 2004. I received a BA and MAT from Goucher College and have been certified by the State of Maryland to teach both Elementary Education and Music K-12. When I'm not teaching, you might see me running up Greenetree Road, biking through Stevenson, and sitting in the stands at Ravens and O's games. Archives
