In both lower school at KSDS,, we celebrate Sukkot with songs that not only teach about the holiday, but allow us to use our percussion instruments in creative ways. Incorporating some simple rhythms with sticks allows the children to experience more repetitions of the songs in a way that keeps their attention. Below, our kindergarten classes show how they build a sukkah with their "hammers," while the first grade demonstrates a percussion pattern they learned for the song Orchim Lachag. As children grow, the skills they are taught become more difficult. Below, third grade also plays instruments to Orchim Lachag, but here a second instrument, the tambourine, plays off-the-beat, a more advanced skill.

Sara R. FuldI have been teaching lower school music at KSDS since the fall of 2004. I received a BA and MAT from Goucher College and have been certified by the State of Maryland to teach both Elementary Education and Music K-12. When I'm not teaching, you might see me running up Greenetree Road, biking through Stevenson, and sitting in the stands at Ravens and O's games. Archives
